Advancements for All: The Prius Project, Day One

by M Kelley

Montana Gold for the win.

Forgive me (or rejoice, one of two) for today’s briefer-than-normal post, the first of a short series:

Over the last week I was approached by ReachNash to create hanging sculpture and painted elements to travel with Toyota’s Prius v and Free Yr Radio music festival tents.

The upside: creative illustration, the use of reclaimed and upcycled materials, and good ole gettin’ dirty with hands-on making that’ll travel to Lollapalooza (Chicago), Outside Lands (San Francisco), Bumbershoot (Seattle), Langerado (Ft Lauderdale), and Voodoo Fest (New Orleans).

The downside? A little under a week total make-time.

It was a simple choice. Much like Reed Richards, it was time to assemble the Fantastic Four and knock this thing into outer space:

There’s me, being our client contact and paperwork priestess between working on the Prius v themed works and adding on the sculpture;

Corey Lamp from previous Designer Friends fame, providing extra hands while channelling his innate sense of the 80s for the Free Yr Radio works;

Stephen Zerne, an ArtNerd and also a Designer Friend, as structural collaboration for the structure and creator of its travel crate;

and Lindsey Bailey, whose previous Poof experience makes her a usual suspect for sculpture as our concept artist and hands-on creator.

Corey shows those bins what-for!

Today was planning and assembling, sorting and striking.

Reclaimed plastics

Reclaimed papers

Reclaimed metals

...and plastic bags preparing to be upcycled into knit elements.

We did manage to rummage through hoarded materials held over from the MacGuyver Challenge concept, in addition to being grateful that I haven’t emptied my recycling containers in over a month, but we’ve still got a lot of collection and upcycling to go. It’s like participating in Trash to Treasure all over again, but with all of the responsiveness and inventiveness of installation work.

Stephen plays with embellishment concepts...

...all of which reference the theme of growth, development, and renewal.

I think it’s safe to say I’m excited.
